Apple unveils the iPad Air 2: The world’s thinnest tablet

At a special event at its headquarters in California, Apple has unveiled the iPad Air 2. As expected, the iPad Air 2 is… thinner and lighter than its predecessor. In fact, it’s the world’s thinnest tablet at just 6.1mm. It’s also gold colored. Hooray. Apple also announced the iPad Mini 3, but it was relegated to a footnote at the end of the main iPad Air 2 presentation.
Inside the iPad Air 2 there’s the A8X SoC. If the A8 was a beast, the A8X is a behemoth. It has 3 billion transistors, a 40% faster CPU, and 2.5x faster GPU. We’re not sure exactly what’s inside the A8X SoC, but it sounds like the CPU is clocked higher than the A8 in the iPhone 6, and there’s probably some more GPU cores (which would explain the extra billion transistors). There were a lot of on-stage demos to showcase just how powerful the A8X SoC is; there were lots of mentions of “truly desktop-class performance.”
The display has some fancy new tech, too, that makes the screen 56% less reflective. No word on the iPad Air 2′s resolution, but it’s probably the same 2048×1536 — no Retina HD here, folks. Apparently there’s “no air gaps” which increases image quality.

Apple also spent a lot of time discussing the new iPad Air 2 camera — an 8-megapixel iSight unit. Combined with image processing by the A8X SoC, the iPad Air 2 will be able to produce some very pretty photos (the sample photo above was taken with the new iPad). There’s also 43-megapixel panorama mode, burst mode, slow-mo, and time lapse (all borrowed from the iPhone 6 camera, I guess). There’s a new FaceTime HD camera on the front of the iPad Air 2, too.
The iPad Air 2 has “up to 20 LTE bands” (more than any other tablet), and 802.11ac 2×2. As expected, there’s also the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, too.ipad-units-sold-versus-pc
Tim Cook spent a lot of time talking about how, despite rumors to the contrary, the iPad is still selling very well — and it still has 100% customer satisfaction. In the last 12 months, Apple sold 70 million iPads — more than any PC OEM.

Curiously, the iPad Mini 3 was relegated to just a few slides at the end of the iPad Air 2′s presentation. It sounds like it’s receiving slight upgrades across the board, including the Touch ID sensor. Pricing starts at $400 for the 16GB model, up to $730 for 128GB with LTE (i.e. $100 less than the normal iPad Air 2).
