Siri might be the most popular talking assistant available on iOS devices, but it is by no means the most popular voice-controlled assistant in the fantasy world. In the past, Space Odyssey’s HAL 9000 gained a lot of notoriety, and these days, JARVIS from the Iron Man franchise is all the rage. If you have watched Iron Man 3, you might have wished for a suit just like Tony Stark’s, complete with its own virtual butler. Well, you’ll have to keep waiting for the suit, but the latter, JARVIS, is here. Marvel has released a new iOS app that replicates the looks and voice of Tony Stark’s assistant, while also doubling as an alarm clock. If you have an Iron Man 3 Blu-ray disc, JARVIS also has the ability to act as your second screen, and a controller for the movie.
JARVIS starts off with a set of spoken instructions, which help newcomers get a handle on the app’s usage and features. At the end of this tutorial, you also have to specify your gender (so that JARVIS can address you accordingly with a “Sir” or “Ma’am”) and there is also the choice between three temperature units (Fahrenheit, Celsius and Kelvin).

For a complete list of instructions recognized by JARVIS, hit the info icon located in the top-right corner of the screen. All the commands have to start with “JARVIS”, and usually have just one other word, like “JARVIS weather”. The app is capable of telling you about the current time and your upcoming appointments (only the ones created using JARVIS), as well as posting to Facebook. To create a reminder, you can either use voice commands, or head to the JARVIS clock screen. From there, it is possible to simply rotate the radial dial and select the exact time when the app should send you a reminder.
For owners of an Iron Man 3 Blu-ray disc, JARVIS offers some extra features. You can control the movie’s playback and unlock hidden suits embedded in the disc at different points. There is a dedicated section for these suits in the mobile app as well.
JARVIS is not really a Siri alternative, and it doesn’t come close to even third-party apps like Speaktoitand Indigo, but there’s that novelty factor to it that makes the app a must-have for all Iron Man fans. The app is optimized for iPhone and iPod touch. Give it a go by heading to the following link.
